The 5AM club: Why Dedicating My Mornings to Myself Was the Best Decision I Ever Made!

December 20, 2024

The 5AM Club introduced me to something I’d never fully embraced: the power of small, consistent steps.

When I first started exploring personal development, a friend recommended I read The 5AM Club by Robin Sharma.

At the time, I was stuck in a frustrating pattern.

I’d get obsessed with a new idea, throw myself into it for a few days, and then lose interest just as quickly.

This all-or-nothing approach left me feeling scattered and unproductive and I was stuck in a cycle of burnout and inconsistency - so I thought I would give it a read.

Now, to warn you, it’s a really long book, and the writing style wasn’t exactly what I expected but I uncovered a message that was truly transformational: waking up early and dedicating time to yourself can create a ripple effect of growth and positive change in every area of your life.

The 5AM Club introduced me to something I’d never fully embraced: the power of small, consistent steps.

Reclaiming My Mornings

Waking up at 5 a.m. every day felt unrealistic for my life, but I loved the core concept: carving out intentional time to focus on growth.

So, I started small, dedicating just 20 minutes in the morning to something meaningful—journaling, stretching, or planning my day. It wasn’t long before I started noticing real changes in my mindset and energy.

But the real breakthrough came when I gave up alcohol.

I hadn’t been out partying every Saturday night, but even a glass or two of wine to “celebrate the weekend” left me feeling groggy and sluggish on Sunday mornings.

Without alcohol in my life, I discovered something extraordinary: I was waking up on Sundays refreshed, energized, and with time on my hands—time I didn’t even realize I had been missing.

Instead of wasting those precious hours, I decided to make them count. I adapted the 5AM concept to fit my weekends, dedicating two hours every Sunday morning to me. That’s when The Sunday Morning Project was born.

Turning Sundays Into a Superpower

Those quiet Sunday mornings became a sacred ritual.

Sometimes I’d go for a run, other times I’d journal with a cup of tea. I started planning my week ahead, setting intentions, and even creating meal plans to stay on track. What surprised me most was how this simple shift transformed the rest of my life.

Here’s what I noticed:

  • Clarity: Taking time to map out my goals gave me focus and direction for the week ahead.
  • Energy: I wasn’t recovering from a sluggish start; I was stepping into the week feeling strong and capable.
  • Healthier habits: Meal planning on Sundays made it easier to eat nourishing, balanced meals all week.
  • Better connections: Instead of being drained or distracted, I was fully present for my friends and family, bringing enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the table.

The ripple effect of this one simple routine was undeniable. Suddenly, Sunday mornings became my favourite time of the week—a chance to reset, refocus, and reconnect with myself.

Why Small Steps Matter

The biggest lesson I’ve taken from The 5AM Club isn’t just about waking up early—it’s about consistency.

Change doesn’t come from one grand gesture or an overnight transformation. It’s the small, intentional actions we take every day (or every Sunday morning) that add up to something extraordinary.

Giving up alcohol gave me the clarity and energy to embrace this concept fully, and it’s now the foundation of my personal growth journey. What started with two hours on a Sunday morning has expanded into every area of my life.

Your Turn: Start Small, Dream Big

So, here’s my challenge to you:

Remove alcohol for one month and dedicate two hours each Sunday morning to R.E.S.E.T using The Sunday Morning Project Formula and see for yourself how much can change in just one month.

You might be surprised by how powerful those small, intentional steps can be.
